Below is a list of script competitions which I put together in late 2014 for a class of my producing students. As time passes the competitions will close and may not re-open in future years.  However, I will leave this list online as it may be a useful starting place for people looking for screenplay competitions.

You may find that these are useful places to follow or contact for ‘spec’ screenplays you can option.

Note: I am not endorsing these competitions; merely letting you know they exist. They have been presented in alphabetical order. You should should always exercise caution when contacting new people and organisations and perform your own due diligence.

CineStory Foundation Retreat and Fellowship

CineStory is a national non-profit dedicated to nurturing emerging screenwriters through mentorship programs. Winners of our competition have gone on to pen films such as IRON MAN, THE CHILDREN OF MEN, BALLAST, KING OF CALIFORNIA and 11:14. Our 2013 Fellow Patrick Tobin had his winning script premiere at the 2014 Toronto Film Festival. Great Gay Screenplay Contest

Hollywood Outreach Program – Scriptwriters Network

Hollywood Outreach Program (HOP) provides access to enlisted production companies, agents, and managers for feature film and movie of the week screenplays (entries) that are recommended by the program. All entries receive at least two studio-style comprehensive written evaluations (coverage) in any one session. The program’s objective is to help writers improve their craft with a goal of obtaining representation, selling or optioning their work, and/or landing a writing assignment. monthly contest

Talentville Script of the Month

A monthly competition for members of who have uploaded full length, drama or sitcom screenplays at the site. Script are reviewed and rated via a peer review system among the members, with the top three rated scripts becoming a finalist at the end of each month. All finalists receive professional coverage by Scriptapalooza, with the order of finish being judged solely by them.

The basic fact about the television business is that in order to get into it you, the writer, must have at least 3 great spec episodes written for existing shows. These episodes are your calling card. They demonstrate that you have what it takes to write “on assignment.” In other words, they show that your writing can meet the demands of a show’s individual (we would never say “peculiar”) style.

WMCm Monthly Contest

We are a company run by and for writers and filmmakers. Our objective is to find hot new writers whose careers we can help launch either at the studio or indie levels, or as TV writers (longform, sitcom, not reality). We also work with playwrights and have access to a number of major theaters in the US and England and also work with novelists, as we have access to most of the major publishers.

Women In Cinema International Screenplay Competition

We are looking for standout screenplays by women. The competition awards the writer who pushes the boundaries of cinema with her original, nuanced characters and dynamic storytelling and dialogue. There are no limitations on content or genre. The main character does not have to be female, but the screenwriter does. Cash awards, as well as a Skype pitch with an executive and pitch preparation for the winning entry.

WriteMovies Writing Contest

Only 1000 entries will be accepted. Enter early and save! Out of close to three hundred “contest sites,” WriteMovies is one of only a handful that has produced movies from winning projects. “The List”, was written by WriteMovies winner Marcus Folmar. It featured Jane Lynch (GLEE), Brad Dourif, Illeana Douglas, Wayne Brady and Sydney Poitier and was acquired by Warner Bros.

Writers Boot Camp Fellowship

Each month, three $5000 full scholarships to the Writers Bootcamp Online Professional Membership (OPM) are awarded, including an opportunity to compete for an annual writing/development deal with Writers Boot Camp Productions and/or a studio, network or independent producer. The Writers Boot Camp Fellowship is unlike any other. Aside from having three winners a month, Creative Categories change each month, reflecting viable genres and project parameters for both features and original TV series.
