Music = characters know they're singing (Queen movie, Elvis one). Musical = characters don't know they're singing.

That was my first thought too! But Queen, Elvis, Complete Unknown et al are really biographies. Discount those and what are we left with? Whiplash, Almost Famous and, er, Spinal Tap?

I mean, I'm no stickler, I'm not against double counting a band biopic as both biography and music but in the second chart, biography is midtable, not really improved by a twist whilst "music" films are massively improved by a twist...

So what are the outliers? What are the "music" films that are so massively improved by a twist?? I'm so pumped for the reveal...
