The decline in romance correlates with the feminist movement of the 60’s and 2020’s. This article is touching on a root cause of theatrical films decline outside its competition with streamers- it’s the political-social ideological choke hold put on filmmakers by the ideologues. This is not a reflection of filmmakers or audiences but of ideological gate keepers. There is only so long humans can last without being allowed to laugh or fall in love (and in parallel only so long studios can use M&A’s and institutional external funding to survive). Eventually as a medium for art and entertainment, especially one combined with commerce- the ideological biases of progressivism and 4th wave feminism will need to be remove at least at a main stream level in order to survive. No more blaming the male gender, covid, strikes, Super Bowl weekend, streaming trends and so on- the industry must at last look in the mirror.
You're right, sadly... None of the young actresses today even look like they could do rom-coms or romantic drama. In fact, there's an arrogance about them that is HIGHLY off-putting. They give off a vibe that they don't even enjoy acting, what roles they pick, they put down core themes of the movies they star in, dismiss the audiences, BLAME the audiences if a film flops instead of apologizing, etc. A lot of them only want to play roles that reflect their limited political and sexual beliefs. They believe if they're lesbian, they should only play lesbians, etc. It's impossible to name the 2020s versions of Julia Roberts, Meg Ryan and Sandra Bullock - they were women in the 90s, who could produce a smile and big laugh in a minute and had charisma and chemistry.
I'm 41 now, and I just don't go to the cinema because there's nothing light for me to enjoy. I'm tired of giant Gorillas, Robots, Mutants and Wizards destroying cities. I'd like to see beautiful women and handsome men wearing tailored clothes being witty and charming to each other. Principled, mature men standing up for their ladies and protecting families and their community and women that are feminine, appreciative, intelligent and resourceful. We need more of these movies and original musicals, comedies and adventure to exotic locations. We need ESCAPISM, modern life is bad enough with politics, war and the cost of living. For £10, I need to get away for 2 HOURS into an exciting, intriguing world. Hollywood used to do that as early as 20 years ago.
Now the obsession with the social, political and other agendas has destroyed Hollywood, yet they spend hundreds of millions of dollars pushing this on us, acting like they know best. All people want is to see the traditional family structure and men falling in love with women and boy meets girl... This is why I now watch Indian movies and my 80s, 90s and 00s Blu-ray collection... Phew, rant over!
These generalizations are not backed up by data and feel like someone who does not watch a large number of new movies, instead they feel like generalizations from someone who refuses to watch new movies because of preconceived biases against them.
There are no 2020s versions of Julia Roberts, Meg Ryan, and Sandra Bullock because the movie star system degraded through the 00s in the endless quest for four-quadrant global blockbusters. Saoirse Ronan, Anya-Taylor Joy, and Zendaya are every bit as good of actors as them, every bit as charismatic and engaging--but they have no space to grow their careers. Hollywood doesn't make many mid-budget comedies and dramas anymore, let alone romcoms, as this article very much shows. It's not "arrogance" which has no evidence to back it up, just incredible bias. It's that audiences aren't watching these films anymore in theaters, so Hollywood doesn't make them as major releases, which creates a downward spiral. A movie like Challengers or Babygirl in 2024 is no more controversial than the sex thrillers of the 90s, and are better, too, but neither of them made any significant money because star power is so much lower, because everyone just watches this stuff on steaming, as this article is discussing.
Rants about media agendas in the same time that major companies like Disney are censoring their own releases and movies with even slight controversy get buried under the sand--Book of Clarence got instantly memory holed for example--reveals more about the lack of movie watching that modern internet commenters do than it does about the state of the industry. Hollywood is running away from perceived diversity as fast as it can in its major releases. That doesn't mean classic romances and dramas are coming back, though, because they just don't make enough money anymore.
There are of course plenty of amazing, uplifting films out there for you to watch if you really want, releasing every single year. You just have to stop being so biased against "agenda pushing" lies you have been fed from social media and go out there to find these movies yourself. And please watch them in theaters, because that's the only way for Hollywood to care enough to keep making them.
For my 2024 recommendations, you ought to watch The Fall Guy, Here, and Hit Man. These are traditional, joy-inducing experiences you are looking for, and none of them were particularly big hits unfortnately.
"There are no 2020s versions of Julia Roberts, Meg Ryan, and Sandra Bullock because the movie star system degraded through the 00s in the endless quest for four-quadrant global blockbusters".
- It wasn't that, as there has always been a desire for Romantic Comedy and Drama. Romantic Comedies are not just silly PG stuff like Failure To Launch or How To Lose A Guy In 30 Days but raunchy, sex-driven stuff like American Pie sequels, Sex Drive, 40-Year-Old Virgin, 40 Days and 40 Nights, The Girl Next Door, Road Trip, etc.

- There must be a way they can get involved with producing their own films, instead of just taking what producers are presenting to them. They are Gen Z...

- When I said arrogance, it's that they are too willing to talk to anyone with a microphone and be critical of the popular themes of the movies that they are starring in. Rachel Zegler seems to be generating so much free negative publicity for the upcoming $200m Snow White through various stupid comments. Disney knows that the picture is already facing challenges and should advise her not to answer anything.

- Basic Instinct set the standard for mainstream 90s erotic thrillers, after that other studios tried but their flopped disastrously. I didn't watch Challengers or Babygirl, neither movie interested me, especially Babygirl with Nicole Kidman having so much botox and fillers in the last 15 years she cannot emote at all alongside her poor acting skills.

- I saw the trailers for The Fall Guy, Here, and Hit Man and they just did not cut it for me. Hollywood will have to try harder. Thanks for responding though!
I hear you, and I deeply appreciate your honesty. I completely relate as someone who loves Hollywood’s golden era of uplifting, joyful films—before this last decade of politicization took over. What you’re describing isn’t lost; these are timeless, archetypal, and deeply human qualities that audiences will always crave. I promise you: those magical, unforgettable cinematic experiences aren’t gone forever. I will do everything in my power to bring them back.
Idea for a report- to what degree do studios executives social and political biases affect films made and released? Perhaps paint a picture of to what extent the executives live in a bubble or not, to what degree do they actually listen to viewers needs vs imposing onto them
